ORIGINS OF THE PROJECT
The
idea behind open source novel came to me sometime
in 2005. I'd already written a few screenplays
and started a couple of novels. While reading
through a folder of story ideas, I became upset
thinking that most of my ideas would never see
the light of day. Randomly I pulled an idea from
the folder and decided to recruit other people to
finish the story. In early 2006 I bought this
domain and used Apple’s iWeb to throw together a
website. I mentioned it to a couple friends, and
asked them to write a page. Some time later that
year, someone in Texas came across the site and
wrote a page. I've never advertised or told
anyone else about the site, I just didn't have
the time. Early this year it occurred to me that
I still liked the idea and thought maybe with a
little re-design, additional features and some
promotion I might be able to get something going.
So here it is - open source novel!
ABOUT THE WEBSITE:
open
source novel is a collaborative writing project.
Our goal is to work with authors, published and
un-published, to create intriguing works of
fiction. Once complete, some works will be
published with 90% of net income going to the
authors. Novel projects on the site will be
written one page per author, although as the site
grows we may include ‘one chapter per author’
projects. Short stories and poems will be
published as themed collection books. In the
comics’ section, we hope to bring this already
strong collaborative writing environment to more
independent writers and artists.
ABOUT ME:
My
name is Joshua Murphy and I'm the creator of open
source novel. I'm thirty-two years old, happily
married and the father of two beautiful girls.
During the day and to pay the bills, I work for
an industrial distributor. At night I fantasize
about being a screenwriter or web developer…
depending on the night of course! Two things
allow these fantasies to continue: I have many
ideas that I'm incapable of letting go and I have
a loving wife who gives me endless encouragement
and support. A couple of things that seem to
prevent these fantasies from becoming a reality
are, I have no web development training or
experience, and I have trouble re-reading and
re-writing anything I work on (I apologize in
advance for any typos you may find here). That
being said, the one thing you need to know about
me is that I won't quit! If you have any
questions shoot me an email. I hope you enjoy the
site!
